For Patients & Families:
Before Your Visit
Image Children's Hospital Boston's world-renowned doctors are available to serve all of your child's health care needs, from regular check-ups to specialist consultations.

To make an appointment:

Call 617-355-6000, or go to our Clinical Services page to select the program/service or department that your child needs. Or, have your child's pediatrician call us for a second opinion or a referral.

What to bring to an appointment:
  • Doctor's or specialist's name
  • Department and building name
  • Name and telephone number of your referring physician
  • Insurance card(s)
  • Co-payment for your insurance, if applicable
  • Referrals or authorizations from your child's primary care doctor's office, if applicable
  • Medical or personal records, such as X-rays or lab tests. If you are unsure what to bring, call the department you are scheduled to visit
  • A list of your child's medications
  • A list of questions you may have (if appropriate for your child's situation and maturity, you may want to have him or her come up with questions that he or she is curious about)
  • Your child's and your Social Security numbers (for insurance purposes)
  • Any forms mailed to you by the department
  • Books, games, snacks, formula, diapers, change of baby clothes or other necessities (please do not bring food if your child must fast for testing)
Returning patients - What to bring:
Insurance and demographic information is verified at every visit. Please bring your insurance card with you. If your insurance information, address or phone number should change, please contact us so we can contact you if necessary.
Preparing your child:
To help you and your child prepare emotionally or mentally for your visit to the hospital or doctor's office, see our age-related guidelines for preparing your child for the hospital.
Helpful tips:
  • Give yourself an extra half hour before your scheduled appointment time to park and get to your appointment. Parking and traffic can be difficult in the Longwood Medical Center Area.

  • For detailed information on what to expect at your child's appointment, such as how long the appointment will take or any guidelines your child may need to follow beforehand, see our Clinical Services page and select the program/service or department you have an appointment with.

  • If you need to bring other children, try to find another adult to come with you to assist you.

  • Upon arriving at the Main Entrance, look for an Ask me! volunteer or stop at the information desk if you need assistance or directions.

Urgent Appointments:
Many departments offer urgent visits daily. Your child's primary care physician often will call and request a same day appointment for certain situations. If you need to see a specialist at Children's immediately, please call your primary care physician and ask for an urgent referral to Children's.
