Kids Design the Future
Au Bon Pain Cafe, Main Lobby
Image Inspired by Richard Arbib's unique vision, patients at Children's have been inventing all sorts of devices to make the hospital (and the world) a better place. Last month's reception was a huge hit with several young inventors showcasing their ideas and a visit from Mr. Sharf who provided the exhibit Designing the Future: Original Design Drawings by Richard Arbib on display in the lobby-level connecting cooridor.

SPUDNIK and other stories by Jeffu!
Main Lobby (behind the Reception Desk)
Image Jeff "Jeffu" Warmouth is a Massachusetts-based media artist who has managed to make a career out of playing with his food. His artwork incorporates photography, video, sculpture, and digital media, and often uses jokes and comic twists to subvert logic, language, identity, and culture. Jeff has exhibited at the DeCordova Museum, the Boston Center for the Arts, and Art Interactive in Cambridge, and his award-winning film/video work has screened in festivals internationally. He received his MFA from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and heads the Interactive Multimedia program at Fitchburg State College. Learn more at: www.jeffu.tv.

Tommy Hollenstein: Artist on Wheels
The Gallery at Children's Hospital Boston,
300 Longwood Avenue, Main Campus
Image Can you imagine if your paintbrush looked like this?

A new show in The Gallery at Children's features paintings by California artist, Tommy Hollenstein, who uses the wheels on his motorized wheelchair as his paintbrush.

In 1985, at 24 years old, Tommy survived a mountain biking accident that left him a quadriplegic. His canine companion Weaver was the inspiration in finding the road back to his art. It is a continuing journey that is sometimes melancholy, and sometimes jubilant but always inspirational.

Visit Tommy's website to view his work. All purchases benefit Art for Kool Kidz. For more information, call 617-927-4400 or email the L'attitude Gallery .

Faces and Voices of Autism
Offices at 1295 Boylston Street, 1st Floor Lobby
Image For the past several years, May Institute has worked with professional photographer Andrew Child to compile a photographic library of students who attend the Institute's special schools. The resulting work is a series of environmental portraits that open a window into the life of these children that is ordinarily closed to the general public, providing a powerful tool to raise awareness about autism.

ART through a Microscope
The Gallery at Children's, Main Lobby
Image Pictures taken through a microscope, or "Photomicrographs," are used by scientists and researchers but also prized by artists for their unusual, colorful beauty. The familiar objects in this exhibit seem other-worldly when magnified 25, 100 or 400 times their original size! See if you can find the dinosaur bone, feather, broccoli, meteorite and microchip.

Children's Hospital Boston is delighted to present this exciting exhibit in our Main Lobby, which features several winners of the Nikon Small World Competition. Learn more about Photomicrography at www.nikonsmallworld.com.

A Brighter Way, Paintings by Cristina Powell
Au Bon Pain Cafe Gallery, Main Lobby
Image Cristina, 18 from Kalamazoo, Michigan, loves to paint. She and her mother are often in Boston for treatments, and despite their difficulties they remain full of joy and thankfulness. When she was only four days old, Cristina was adopted from Lima, Peru and soon after was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy and a movement disorder.

It's evident from the dazzling display of color in the Au Bon Pain Caf that Cristina loves what she does. She says, "When I was young I wanted to be a doctor, then I wanted to be a nurse. Now, my paintings are making people feel better. I guess this is what I was supposed to do."

The Caf Gallery is funded by Au Bon Pain and is dedicated to showing art by local kids and Children's patients.

Prints, t-shirts and cards are available by calling 616-881-9800.

Invisible Boston: Portrait of a City in Infrared, Photographs by Andrew Child
Lobby, 1295 Boylston, Children's Hospital Boston Offices
Access is limited to employees of the hospital and approved visitors.
Image There's just something fascinating about light we cannot see. Beyond the deepest shades of red the human eye can perceive lies the infrared. Colors we don't have words to describe mix with shades of light and dark that often seem backwards.

The result is a unique series of photographs that are hauntingly surreal, dreamlike, and carry a sense of other place and other time while remaining intimately familiar. They are both utterly impossible and just as true as the view out your office window.

With this exhibit, I hope to share my fascination for this invisible city with you or, if nothing else, give you something to ponder on the elevator ride back up to that office.

The Invisible Boston exhibition is composed of one-dozen, limited edition, museum-quality, archival photographs that are available for purchase. Please contact Andrew at 978-263-4551 or andrew@AndrewChildPhotography.com.
