The Adaptive Dance Program is an innovative dance class for children with Down syndrome. The program was developed by Michelina Cassella, the Director of Physical Therapy and Occupational Health at Children's Hospital Boston and the Director of Physical Therapy Services for Boston Ballet.
Now in its sixth year, the joint venture between Children's and Boston Ballet is thriving. It is the first collaboration between a prominent U.S. dance company and a leading pediatric hospital to provide movement classes for children with special needs.
Taught by renowned Boston Ballet instructors, this program uses ballet and dance to enhance movements, improve coordination, fitness, balance, focus, and listening for children with Down syndrome. The program also fosters a love of dance and creative expression, while boosting the children's self-esteem and self-expression.
