New Clinical Site in Waltham Offers Patients Easy Access to World Class Physicians in Nearly 20 Specialty Areas

Children's Hospital Boston at Waltham today opened its doors to patients at its new Waltham facility, which expects to serve 20% of children and their families coming to Children's for outpatient care each year. Home to pediatric physicians in over 20 specialty areas, the Waltham site offers patients an easy alternative to traveling to downtown Boston for secondary and tertiary care services.
"We are committed to ensuring that patients and their families have access to high quality care in and near their own communities," said James Mandell, MD, president of Children's Hospital Boston. "By building additional capacity at the Waltham site - both physically and with the addition of new staff - we can improve the overall patient experience."
As part of Phase I in the development of Children's Hospital Boston at Waltham, 21,000 of the 200,000 square feet available at the site have been redesigned for Children's Hospital clinical programs and services in an ambulatory clinic setting. Children's Hospital Boston is currently considering opportunities for Phase Two of the expansion, which is likely to include outpatient surgery and short overnight stays in the future.
"Our planning team looked closely at the needs of our patients and service areas that were currently in high demand to determine how we could best serve patients in the MetroWest area and surrounding communities," said Sandra Fenwick, Chief Operating Officer at Children's.

Programs and services currently offered at Waltham include: Adolescent Medicine, Allergy, Audiology, Cardiology, Dermatology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, General Surgery, Nephrology, Neurology, Nutrition, Ophthalmology, Orthopedic Surgery, Otolaryngology, Plastic Surgery, Preventive Cardiology, Radiology, Renal, Sports Medicine and Urology. Existing and future patients of Children's Hospital Boston should ask their physician about opportunities to be seen at Waltham or dial 1-781-216-2100 to schedule an appointment.
Children's recently announced that it had recruited Steve Gordon as the Chief Administrator at its Waltham site. In addition, the hospital has recruited approximately 30 new administrative, support and nursing staff and scheduled 60 pediatric specialists to practice at the Waltham location. The hospital also invested significant financial resources in upgrading and renovating the facilities for the first phase of its opening.
''I'm excited to be at the helm of such an important new extension of Children's. The location is convenient, parking is free, the upgraded facilities fantastic and patients still have access to the same top-notch team and technology that they do at the Longwood campus. I think this is going to be a real winner for our patients and their families,'' said Gordon.

In addition to Children's Hospital Boston at Waltham, Children's Hospital offers a number of other community based sites, including three other ambulatory centers licensed by Children's in Lexington, Peabody and the Martha Eliot Health Center in Jamaica Plain. In addition, Children's physicians staff clinics and hospital-based services, such as emergency departments and neonatal intensive care units, at Beverly Hospital, Caritas Good Samaritan Medical Center, Caritas Norwood Hospital, MetroWest Medical Center, Winchester Hospital and South Shore Hospital.
Children's Hospital Boston at Waltham is located at 9 Hope Avenue, the site of the former Waltham Hospital. Since the closure of Waltham Hospital in 2003, a number of other medical providers have leased space at the site, all of whom will continue to do so under Children's ownership of the site.
