4,000 Walkers Log Miles for Miracles at NSTAR's Walk for Children's Hospital Boston

June 9, 2008

Nearly 4,000 walkers from New England logged miles for miracles along the Charles River at NSTAR's Walk for Children's Hospital Boston this weekend. Children's Hospital patients, families and staff, NSTAR employees and other partners laced up their sneakers and rallied to raise money for Children's patient care, research and community health programs. Mayor Thomas M. Menino also attended to cheer on the walkers.

"With the help of so many partners, Children's Hospital has made so many kids' dreams come true. The scientific research done at Children's will help children all over the world. This fine institution is a proud part of Boston's rich history and I am pleased to be able to take part in the walk," Mayor Menino said.

"We're grateful for each walker's commitment to raising funds for Children's exceptional care and cutting-edge research," said Dr. James Mandell, president and CEO of Children's Hospital Boston. "The Walk is a great family event; not only is it fun for everyone, it also teaches young kids about giving back to others."

Children's Hospital honored two patients, Rhiannnon Maher of Mashpee and Lauren Norton of Medway, as NSTAR Walk Child Ambassadors for their triumph in overcoming tremendous medical odds and commitment to inspiring others to participate in, and fundraise for, the Walk. Maher helped kick-off the 7-mile Walk while Norton led the 2-mile walk.

NSTAR, the electricity and natural gas company that serves over 1.4 million customers in Massachusetts, is the named sponsor of the walk. NSTAR is also lending expertise to promote and help increase participation in the Walk. More than 200 NSTAR employees from the NSTAR Walkers Team walked this weekend.

Additional sponsors include: Best Buy, Boston Celtics Shamrock Foundation, Liberty Mutual, Pepsi, Roche Brothers, and Waste Management. Media partners include WROR-FM, Improper Bostonian and Gatehouse Media Group.
