Children's Hospital Boston today announced the completion of the first phase of a project that will allow children staying overnight at the hospital the opportunity to plug into the Internet without having to leave their room. High-speed data ports have been installed and activated in every main in-patient hospital room, allowing patients and patient families free access to a source of entertainment and communication that was previously available only on a limited basis. With the new data ports, children staying at the hospital can hook up their personal computers to the Internet without requiring them to leave their rooms. The hospital is currently piloting several different hardware devices which will eventually be made available to those patients who are unable to provide their own personal computer allowing every patient the opportunity to use the service.
Internet access at Children's Hospital Boston is free-of-charge to all in-patients and their families who own a personal computer and wish to use the service. The free Internet connection is currently available to all patients who provide their own computer, much like high-speed Internet connections made available at some hotels. As part of the hospital-wide program, a network-wide content filtering system has been implemented to prevent users from viewing any inappropriate content.
