Videogames and Violence -- Learn how media can affect your child's health
Did You Know?

  • The average American child ages 8 to 18 spends close to 7 hours each day with television, video games or other types of media
  • 79 percent of American children now play computer or video games on a regular basis
  • 80 percent of the video games preferred by young people contain violent or aggressive content

Video games are as popular as ever and with the holidays approaching they are on every child's list of ''must haves.'' Researchers say that many of these games are violent and have an increasing effect on the children who play them. So as a parent, how do you know which games are appropriate for your child and how do you monitor them?

Dr. Michael Rich, director of the Center on Media and Child Health at Children's Hospital Boston, can offer important insight on the heatlh risks associated with the media including video games.

For more information, call the Center on Media and Child Health at Children's at 617-355-6000.
