Children's Hospital Boston is pleased to announce that after an extensive national search, Dr. Robert Shamberger has been appointed as the new chief of surgery and general surgeon-in-chief. A valued member of the Children's Hospital Department of Surgery Staff for the past 20 years, most recently serving as the interim chief of Surgery, Shamberger brings a wealth of leadership experience and a strong sense of vision to the department.
''Dr. Shamberger's history as an accomplished surgeon and his commitment to Children's Hospital Boston made him an ideal candidate in our search for a new chief of surgery,'' said Dr. James Mandell, president and chief executive officer of Children's Hospital Boston. ''It is our mission to provide the highest quality health care to every Children's patient. The appointment of Dr. Shamberger as chief of Surgery will allow us to continue to deliver on this mission.
''Being selected from such an experienced pool of candidates for this position is an incredible honor,'' said Shamberger. ''With the vast number of multidisciplinary resources at Children's Hospital Boston and the dedication of its terrific staff, it is my goal to further develop the Department of Surgery to maintain its position as the leader in its field, both in research and treatment.''
Shamberger began his relationship with Children's in 1983 when he started his training as a surgical resident, advancing to chief resident the following year. A pediatric surgeon, Shamberger specializes in oncology, inflammatory bowel disease, and chest wall deformities. He has published over 150 scientific articles and book chapters, and is currently the chair of the Surgical Discipline of the Children's Oncology Group, which is responsible for setting the national research agenda for pediatric surgical oncology.
A professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School, Shamberger will now become the Robert E. Gross Professor of Surgery in his new position. The Robert E. Gross professorship is an endowed Chair through Harvard Medical School. Strengthening the department's robust training program, Shamberger remains committed to the enhancement of the rapid translation of discoveries from the lab to the patient's bedside.
Shamberger, originally from Columbia, Mo., now resides in Wellesley, Mass.
