The new SCN is a state-of-the-art facility with updated technology and added space aimed at improving patient care as well as making it easier for parents to spend time with their newborns. Designed by the SCN physicians and nurses, the new unit boasts an environment that maximizes accessibility, ergonomics and aesthetics to provide top-notch care to very special patients and their families.

The new unit features a family resource area where parents can research medical information over the Internet; two overnight rooms where parents can get a good night's sleep before returning to their newborns the next morning; and a sibling play area with a large plasma television and video games to help keep the family entertained. The added space, also provides parents with a more private environment for bonding with their infants.

Given the level of specialized care provided by the SCN at Beverly Hospital, many sick or premature infants can avoid being transferred for treatment. This allows North Shore families to stay with their newborns throughout the treatment process. When newborns do require transfer to Boston for intensive care services, their treatment is coordinated through the collaboration that exists between Beverly Hospital and Children's Hospital Boston for neonatal services.
