Community outreach is an important goal of the New England Consortium. The Teen Challenge Program, adult weekends, camps, and other activities have all been supported by the New England Consortium. These programs are designed to stimulate social support and positive attitudes among the population of people with metabolic disorders and their families.

The Teen Challenge is a physical-focused expedition to help teens relate to each other - and not just with regards to PKU. The program gives them the social support they need. Past programs included 5 days aboard the Tall Ship Ernestina and a weekend at a ropes course. This year a 4-day whitewater-rafting trip took place in Maine (www.adv-bound.com). One teen remarked that he had never met another teen with PKU before, and that's what these programs are all about. To read more about upcoming programs, visit the Calendar on the Patients and Families section of the website.

At the yearly summer camp, children with PKU and other metabolic disorders attend the Southshore YMCA camp. Nutritionists and other staff from the metabolic centers in New England are there to help prepare the low phenylalanine meals and monitor nutritional intake for our campers. Along with the traditional skit and sing-a-longs, kids help with food preparation and enjoy the end of summer camp experience. The Consortium also sponsors individuals to attend other conferences and camps that are coordinated by other centers.

The New England Consortium, through Children's Hospital Boston's Camp Fund, also provides a limited number of scholarships for individuals to attend activities or conferences that involve a fee. Social support and education are essential goals of the New England consortium and we encourage as many members of the metabolic population to participate in these events as possible. We truly appreciate your support.
