Endocrinology

Patient StoryBoston Children's Hospital is a leading destination for the treatment of childhood endocrine disorders, including diabetes and thyroid problems. Our pediatric endocrinology department is among the largest in the world and has been named one of the best programs of its kind in the United States by U.S. News & World Report.

Our team of specialists - which includes 35 pediatric endocrinologists - provides state-of-the-art diagnosis, treatment, and clinical management to more than 7,000 children each year. Notably, we are one of the only hospitals in the nation to offer a dedicated multidisciplinary program for type 2 diabetes in children. Our patients receive personalized follow-up care from our partners at the nearby Joslin Diabetes Center, which has developed a medically proven program to help children stay on a lifelong path to health.

We work closely with the physicians in your home country to ensure that your child receives coordinated care through adulthood, and we provide comprehensive support -- both emotional and logistical -- to your entire family. From diagnosis to long-term follow-up, we do everything we can to ensure that your experience is as seamless and stress-free as possible.

Conditions We Treat

We treat the full range of disorders affecting the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, thyroid, parathyroid glands, adrenal glands, gonads, and pancreas, including:

  • Diabetes (type 1 and type 2)
  • Hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism
  • Pancreatitis
  • Disorders of sexual development
  • Hypospadias
  • Short stature

Our Family-Centered Approach

We specialize in family-centered care. We bring together a broad collection of experts -- including pediatric endocrinologists, endocrinology nurses, registered dietitians, and mental health professionals -- to support you and your child and help you get through the early challenges of managing your child's condition. Using resources such as the hospital's innovative Optimal Weight for Life program, our team builds customized treatment plans designed to keep your child healthy over the long term.

Throughout the entire process, your child and family receive compassionate care from our truly integrated medical team. We know the family is the most important source of emotional support for children, and that's why we view family members as a vital component of each child's healthcare team. Families are always welcome on the patient care unit and are encouraged to comfort and soothe their children. And when they're away from the units, family members may call at any time to speak with the child's nurse.

Research and Innovation

We operate one of the nation's most extensive research programs focused on pediatric endocrine disorders. Our team of more than 50 scientists and clinical researchers is attempting to unravel the genetic and biochemical underpinnings of the endocrine system, and is constantly studying new ways to improve diabetes management, enhance our knowledge of growth and development disorders, and address other endocrine malfunctions in children. Some of our initiatives include:

  • Identifying potential sources of stem cells in endocrine organs to eventually replace diseased tissue
  • Identifying the genetic causes of endocrine diseases (including short stature and obesity)
  • Evaluating methods to slow down aging and prevent cancer by regulating insulin signaling in the brain
  • Developing treatments for type 1 diabetes that do not require insulin
  • Developing drugs that treat obesity by regulating leptin levels
