This is the domestic component of the research education program for
clinical fellows (academic year) and medical students (summer) -- upon
which our recently funded Fogarty International MH/DD program was also
modeled. The MH/DD program is now completing the 2nd year of the 3-yr
NIMH cycle.

The national MH/DD program has involved Academic Year Fellows and
Student Summer Interns. The purpose of this grant is to provide
research experiences in the underserved area of mental health of
developmental disabilities.

The Academic Year Fellowships (n=6, part-time, September-May) include:
1) pre- and early post-doctoral fellows in psychology, psychiatry, and
pediatrics; and 2) graduate level students in psychology and allied
disciplines. There is a structured educational program involving
contents and methods based curriculum in MH/DD.

The Summer Internships (n=4, 8-weeks, full-time, June-August) recruit
students of diverse backgrounds particularly minorities, women, and
students with exceptional interest, commitment to or personal/family
experience of developmental disabilities. The program has targeted end-
of-first year medical students, but other interested students are
encouraged to apply.
