Crohn's Disease in Children

  • What is Crohn’s disease in children?

Crohn’s disease (CD) is a form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a condition in which one or more parts of your child’s intestinal tract become inflamed. (Ulcerative colitis (UC) is the other main form of IBD.)

Crohn’s Disease can often be controlled very well with medication and lifestyle changes.

Crohn’s Disease is a chronic—but highly manageable—disease. Consider these facts about Crohn’s disease in kids:

    • Crohn’s disease may be mild, severe or anywhere in between.
    • It can affect any region of the digestive tract, including the mouth, esophagus, stomach, duodenum, appendix, colon or anus. The most common area to be affected is the last part of the small intestine (terminal ileum).
    • Crohn’s is most often diagnosed in young adults but can be seen in young children as well.
    • It can often be controlled very well with medication and lifestyle changes. Surgery may also be an option.
