In the laboratory of Lois Smith, MD, PhD, at Children's Hospital Boston, researchers are studying mouse retinas - the nerve layer that lines the back of the eye and detects light - in hopes of better understanding the blood vessels that supply neural tissue with nutrients and oxygen.

In the meantime, their research has produced a series of wildly colorful, microscopic images of the eye that look like works of art.
