A magnetic fix for sepsis
Sepsis, an infection of the blood causing an inflammatory response, can lead to multi-organ failure and is responsible for more than 200,000 deaths per year in the U.S. alone. Chong Yung, PhD, (left) a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Don Ingber, MD, PhD, Interim Co-Director of Children's Vascular Biology Program, is developing a filtration device that uses magnetism to rapidly pull pathogens from the blood. Since antibiotics don't take effect immediately, Yung believes such a device could be a first line of defense against sepsis.
