A handful of mesenchymal stem cells from amniotic fluid are placed in culture and incubated so more cells can grow. A few days later, the cells have proliferated to completely line the cell culture plate. With appropriate handling, they are ready to be transformed into specialized cells needed to form tissues for surgical use -- in this case, a patch to repair the baby's congenital diaphragmatic hernia.
