The mother undergoes amniocentesis to obtain fetal cells for genetic analysis, so more can be learned about the baby's condition. This fresh sample of amniotic fluid contains many cells cast off by the fetus. The cells that are still living -- constituting just 1.8 percent of the sample -- appear white. These will be harvested to grow a patch to repair the baby's congenital diaphragmatic hernia.
