Scaling up production
Fauza's team, in association with the Center for Human Cell Therapy, recently demonstrated that fetal cells can be grown up and banked by the hundreds of millions -- enough to potentially use in treatment -- during the four- to six-month interval between amniocentesis and birth, while also meeting FDA-accredited Good Manufacturing Practice standards. The team grew up, cryopreserved, thawed and re-expanded the cells in sufficient numbers to potentially use in treatment -- a big boost for making tissue engineering a real option for newborns.
