In 1982, Dr. W. Hardy Hendren (second from left) became chief of surgery at Children's and the first incumbent of the chair in pediatric surgery at Harvard Medical School named in honor of his mentor, Dr. Robert E. Gross. Hendren pioneered major developments in pediatric urology, as well as procedures to separate conjoined twins. On his right is Dorothy Enos, RN, a Children's Nursing School graduate who assisted Hendren in the operating room for 40 years.
