The First Director
Eva Salber, MD, was appointed the first director of Martha Eliot Health Center in 1967. Born and raised in South Africa, her exposure to an apartheid society fueled her ambition to promote public health through community medicine. In her book about Martha Eliot Health Center, Caring and Curing, Eva Salber wrote: "I believe...that it is impossible to plan and deliver good medical care without an awareness of the lifestyles of the people for whom this care is planned." Salber, pictured on the far right, initiated a Health Advisory Committee.
