We are currently in need of all blood types and all types of donations, especially O- and A-!!!
Blood Facts!
  • More than 1,000 units of blood are needed each month at Children's Hospital Boston.
  • Shortages of all blood types happen during the summer and winter holidays.
  • There is no substitute for human blood.
  • Red blood cells carry oxygen to the body's organs and tissues.
  • You can donate double red cells every 112 days, whole blood every 56 days or platelets every 2 weeks.
  • Insects have green blood!
  • The most common reason for NOT donating blood is because they weren't asked. Please donate!!!

Children's Hospital Boston's Blood Donor Center is an independent collection facility serving the needs of the pediatric patient's in the Longwood Medical Area. Established in 1958 primarily to provide fresh blood for the new field of open-heart surgery, we now supply virtually all of the blood and blood products used at Children's Hospital.

Premature infants, children being treated for cancer, and children having heart surgery need blood and platelets from donors of all types.

Please help us meet the needs of our patient's by donating at Children's. Donating blood is the easiest way to save a life. Less than one hour of your time can save up to four patients at Children's.

Our Donation Process: We are equipped with a computerized donor registry that enables us to access your personal donation record immediately.

Our Follow-Through: You will receive a computer generated donor identification card two weeks after your first donation. This wallet-sized card states your blood type and is a convenient way to keep track of your donations.

We Remind You: We will confirm any appointment you make by calling you a day in advance. We will also send you a reminder email on the day you are eligible to donate again. To sign up for this service, please email your name, email address and street address (for verification purposes) to blooddonorcenter@chboston.org

Free Parking: We are happy to provide all our volunteer donors with free all-day parking in the Children's Hospital garage, after a successful donation. Donors will receive a parking voucher at the time of donation to present to the parking attendant.
