Yoshihiro Yonekawa MD Boston Children's Hospital


Dr. Yoshihiro Yonekawa is an adult and pediatric retina surgeon. He is the director of the Pediatric Retina Surgery Program at Boston Children's Hospital, where his team treats children with various retinal conditions, including retinopathy of prematurity, familial exudative vitreoretinopathy, Norrie disease, Coats’ disease, Von Hippel Lindau syndrome, persistent fetal vasculature, congenital retinoschisis, traumatic macular hole, open globe injuries, and all forms of retinal detachment in children. 

Dr. Yonekawa received his MD with honors from Weill Cornell Medical College and completed his ophthalmology residency at Harvard Medical School. He underwent specialized fellowship training in adult and pediatric retina surgery at Associated Retinal Consultants/William Beaumont Hospital. His expertise has been recognized with numerous prestigious awards, including those from the Heed Ophthalmic Foundation, Ronald G. Michels Foundation, and the Retina Society. Dr. Yonekawa has contributed more than 150 original papers, editorials, and textbook chapters to the field. He serves as Assistant Editor for the journal RETINA and as Deputy Editor for the Journal of VitreoRetinal Diseases. He brings to Boston Children’s Hospital the latest treatment techniques for various retinal conditions.

Dr. Yonekawa is an accomplished clinician scientist and has contributed over 150 original papers, editorials, and textbook chapters to the field of adult and pediatric retina. His research achievements have been recognized with multiple awards. He is Assistant Editor for RETINA and Deputy Editor for the Journal of VitreoRetinal Diseases, and a referee for over a dozen journals, including Ophthalmology and JAMA Ophthalmology. His research interests include the development of surgical techniques, minimally invasive surgery, advanced diagnostic imaging, telemedicine, and improving treatment outcomes of adult and pediatric retinal conditions.
