As a clinical neuroradiologist, I work behind the scenes. I rarely meet the children and their families in person but I am always thinking about the individual child and the family behind the images. What knowledge can our images provide to best guide care for that individual child?

I started out as a physicist studying very theoretical concepts but switched into medicine to have a more direct human impact. I chose imaging as a specialty because I enjoy leveraging technology to provide the most relevant information possible. My research also focuses on developing and optimizing technological innovations to improve our ability to diagnose and manage pediatric disorders.

Professional History

My research is focused on understanding physiological mechanisms, not a specific disease process. I help develop technologies tailored to the unique, unmet needs of the fetus and young infant to unravel these mechanisms and attempt to bring innovations to the front-line with the goal of optimizing outcomes for our youngest patients.

At MGH I started the Pediatric subdivision of Neuroradiology. In 2005 I became Chief of Pediatric Radiology and created a stable division that was academically competitive with other pediatric hospitals.

In 2009 I became the founding director of the FNNDSC at BCH. I have created a multidisciplinary, multimodality, imaging center supported by Newborn Medicine, Radiology and Neurology with collaborations in Developmental Medicine, Neurosurgery, Cardiology and Anesthesiology. The primary focus is developing and optimizing technologies and analysis streams to better understanding normal and abnormal brain development in fetuses and young infants. My team is developing innovations in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Magnetoencephalography (MEG) and Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) as well as an overarching Neuroinformatics core.

We are grateful to have been ranked #1 on U.S. News & World Report's list of the best children's hospitals in the nation for the third year in a row, an honor we could not have achieved without the patients and families who inspire us to do our very best for them. Thanks to you, Boston Children's is a place where we can write the greatest children's stories ever told.”
