AK Kaza MD

I am a congenital cardiac surgeon who cares for neonates, infants, children and adults born with congenital heart disease.

I perform a wide spectrum of surgeries for congenital heart defects. My goal is to provide innovative and “cutting edge” cardiac surgical care in an ethical, compassionate, and family-centric fashion.

I am actively involved in all aspects of congenital heart surgery with special emphasis on complete neonatal repairs and cardiac critical care. In addition, I have an active research program with two main goals. The first is to understand the role of prematurity in myocardial recovery after heart surgery. The second focus is working with a multidisciplinary team to develop new and innovative devices to improve care of infants and children with heart disease. I am currently funded by the NIH, B-BIC and the Boston Children’s Hospital Innovestment Grant.

I have a special interest in the education and training of residents and fellows. I have had the privilege of being part of the Thoracic Surgery resident workforce at the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. In this capacity, I helped with administering the scholarship program of the STS for residents and medical students. As a congenital cardiac surgeon, I interact and teach house-staff from various sub-specialties such as congenital cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery, pediatric cardiology, pediatrics, and pediatric critical care.

Professional History

I matriculated from medical school at Boston University, followed by a five year surgical residency at the Ochsner Clinic. During my surgical residency, I took two years off to spend in the thoracic and cardiovascular surgery research laboratory at the University of Virginia. Subsequently, I did my cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at the University of Colorado. I stayed an extra year in Denver to do a fellowship in pediatric cardiac surgery. I then came to Boston for my twelfth and final year of post-graduate training to serve as the chief resident in congenital cardiac surgery. I took my first job in pediatric cardiac surgery at the University of Utah and based at Primary Children’s Hospital. I was in practice there for five years when I was recruited to Boston Children’s Hospital. I have been at Boston Children’s Hospital since 2013 and am involved in all aspects of congenital heart surgery.
