Research Overview

William Harmon's research interests involve the pathophysiology and treatment of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in children. He was one of the earliest members of the North American Pediatric Renal Transplant Cooperative Study (NAPRTCS) and developed the studies and protocols that were subsequently used as the basis for the development of the Cooperative Clinical Trials in Pediatric Transplantation (CCTPT).

One of the most innovative components of these studies is the description and analysis of intragraft gene expression of informative molecules. Dr. Harmon had collaborated with Dr. Terry Strom of the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in the first description of these techniques in 1992. Subsequently, these techniques have formed the basis for defining the immune process in organ transplantation.

Dr. Harmon is currently the Principal Investigator of the two multi-center clinical trials supported by CCTPT and serves as Chairman of its steering committee.
