Research Overview

The goals of Catherine Chen's research are to: Understand the long-term outcomes of patients with pediatric surgical conditions, such as congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), which is a paradigm of chronic disease Assess functional status and health-related quality of life of pediatric surgical patients Assess impact on family of children who have undergone pediatric surgical procedures Define interventions that may enhance children's health-related quality of life and lessen family impact Define optimal treatment strategies for pediatric surgical conditions, such as perforated appendicitis Dr. Chen is currently active in the design and analysis of a prospective study addressing the long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes of CDH survivors and the impact of this condition on their families. She is also prospectively studying the outcomes of children treated for perforated appendicitis, focusing on medical outcomes of patients, cost-effectiveness of treatment strategies, and impact of care on patients and their families. Dr. Chen aims to define optimal treatment strategies for selected pediatric surgical conditions and to identify interventions that may benefits affected children and their families.

About Catherine Chen

Catherine Chen received her MD from Harvard Medical School and her MPH from Harvard School of Public Health. She completed an internship and residency at Deaconess Hospital in Boston, MA, a research fellowship at Children's Hospital Boston, and a fellowship in pediatric surgery at Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada.
