Philosophy of Care

In the Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH) Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) our philosophy is to ensure that every patient receives the best care for the best possible outcomes. We consider our “patient” to be the baby and the family; we are constantly striving to serve the needs of both. This requires a team based approach with all members being essential. Boston Children's is the most unique institution in the world where world class patient care and cutting-edge research is done in perfect harmony. I came here to not only take care of sick infants admitted to the NICU but also understand the underlying genetic and molecular cause so that we can find appropriate treatments. I am truly blessed to take care of such babies and try to make a difference in their and families lives.

PROFESSIONAL HISTORY

Dr. Agrawal is a practicing neonatologist at Boston Children's Hospital and also serves as the Director of the Neonatal Genomics Program. In this role, he utilizes exome and genome sequencing technologies and genetic modeling to identify novel genes in babies born with undiagnosed and often fatal conditions, and studies rare neonatal conditions, such as esophageal atresia, interstitial lung disease and metabolic and mitochondrial diseases. He is working to determine how genomic sequencing technologies may aid in newborn screening as well as their ethical, legal and social implications, and is studying the role of rapid sequencing in NICUs and the impact on care management and costs. Dr. Agrawal runs a basic science laboratory which is funded by the NIH, several local and foundation grants.

Dr. Agrawal serves as an expert for the Department of Newborn Medicine for Boston Children's Hospital Precision Medicine Service. For more information about the Precision Medicine Service please visit bostonchildrens.org/precisionmed.
