Leg Length Discrepancy in Children | Diagnosis

How is leg length discrepancy diagnosed?

The first step in diagnosing a leg length discrepancy is a complete medical history and a physical examination by an orthopedic surgeon.

During the exam, your child's doctor will take measurements of your child's legs and use a block to balance the pelvis. He or she may also watch your child walk, to look for signs that your child is compensating for the discrepancy. The doctor may also ask your child to stand with a block under the shorter leg to confirm the amount of correction that feels best.

In some cases, an x-ray or other imaging tests can provide a more precise measurement of the discrepancy.
