Wear a helmet. Fasten your child in a booster seat. Take a break if being a parent is getting stressful.

These are all good pieces of advice, yet it’s not always enough to keep children safe. Injuries — both unintentional and intentional — are the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 19 in Massachusetts and result in 250,000 emergency room visits each year.

Preventing injuries is important to Children’s Hospital Boston. From educating parents on how to manage the stress of a new baby, to enforcing the use of safety belts and booster seats, Children’s promotes a variety of injury prevention programs and policies that help children and families stay safe.

Last year, our injury prevention and protection services reached more than 7,000 children, parents and caregivers in community settings. In Jamaica Plain, we train home visitors to identify ways families can reduce the risk of fire, poisoning and falls in the home, and we distribute bike helmets at community events to help prevent injuries. Our Child Passenger Safety program distributes car seats to parents and caregivers in Boston and sponsors events to teach proper installation and use.

We also provide specialized care for people who may be victims of abuse or neglect. Our Child Protection Program is a team of physicians, attorneys, psychologists and social workers that work together to support abused and neglected children. Recognizing that entire families can be impacted by abuse, Children’s created the Advocacy for Woman and Kids in Emergencies (AWAKE), to provide advocacy services to parents and children who have experienced abuse.

With the recent increase of violence on the streets of Boston, Children’s is supporting several initiatives aimed at giving youth other outlets like providing summer jobs, access to recreational programs after school and in the summer, and supporting violence prevention programs at community health centers.

"We have a strong partnership with Children's Hospital Boston. Working together, we have been able to make a difference in the lives of many young children and families, including making homes and neighborhoods safer."

A safe haven for
young victims

In October 1998, Children’s Hospital Boston joined with other organizations and agencies in the community to establish the Suffolk County Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC). The CAC is a child-friendly environment where victims of physical and sexual abuse can access all the services they need in one location—law enforcement, advocates, psychiatrists and doctors, including Children’s providers. With Children’s financial and staff support, the center has helped and comforted more than 2,000 abused children.
