Children's Hopsital Boston's Department of Cardiac Surgery provides surgical care for infants, children and adolescents with congenital heart anomalies and acquired conditions of the heart. Performing more than 1,000 operations each year, Children's is the largest pediatric cardiac surgery program in the country.
Since 1938 when Robert Gross, MD, pioneered congential heart surgery at Children's, this department has developed into the leargest of its kind in the country, dealing with the entire range of simple to ultra-complex congenital heart disease.
The Department is comprised of four cardiovascular surgeons, Pedro J. del Nido, MD (Chief of Cardiac Surgery), John E. Mayer, MD, Frank Pigula, MD, Emile Bacha, MD, and Francis Fynn-Thompson, MD. In addition, a chief resident and several junior cardiothoracic residents train in the department.
The departments of Cardiac Surgery and Cardiology enjoy a cooperative and constructive working relationship at Children's Hospital Boston, under the umbrella of the Cardiovascular Program. Joint efforts are an integral part of patient care, teaching and research; several weekly combined conferences are held.
