Image There is a lot of good news to share about pulmonary hypertension. Only a little more than a decade ago our understanding of this condition was very crude, and effective therapy more of a hope than a reality. Thanks to advances in basic science and clinical research, much better therapies have been developed, and nearly every year brings new treatments for this disorder. We've learned a lot about the disease, and have every expectation that this knowledge will lead to new ways of improving the health of our patients.

Even with a decade of good news, things need to be made better. Despite these rapid advances, pulmonary hypertension remains a complex puzzle, and there is still much to learn about what causes it. And we must to continue to improve therapy, as treatments are still not always as effective as needed, and some are very difficult to use.

The mission of the Pulmonary Hypertension Program at Children's Hospital Boston is to do 3 things:

1. Our most important mission is to provide the best possible care for our patients. We use a multidisciplinary approach utilizing experienced physicians and other seasoned clinical professionals. With particularly difficult cases care may also involve consultation with experts at other institutions--with rare ailments such as pulmonary hypertension it is very important to be "networked" with colleagues to bring the most experience possible to the patient.

2. Advance our understanding of pulmonary hypertension, and help develop new therapies. This serves both current and future patients: the therapeutic trials our Program has and is participating in have brought new and effective treatments to our patients sooner than would be otherwise possible.

3. Train new practitioners. As a program with enormous experience in treating pulmonary hypertension, and being part of a medical environment which attracts some of the world's most talented medical professionals, it is our responsibility and privilege to help train the next generation of physicians and other professionals dedicated to curing this disease.
