Elijah & Joshua's Story: Stroke and Heart Murmur

Dr. Wayne Tworetzky with the twins
Our first encounter at Children's Hospital Boston was under very stressful circumstances. At approximately 26 weeks gestation, I went into pre-term labor after learning that Elijah, one of our twins, was developing hydrocephalus (excessive fluid in the brain).

I underwent an MRI at Children's during my week long stay in the hospital. This confirmed what was determined in an earlier ultrasound at another hospital; Elijah had suffered a rather severe bleed (stroke) approximately 10 to 14 days earlier.

A wonderful and supportive staff
The staff of the Children's ultrasound department and MRI department were absolutely wonderful to my husband and me. They answered all our questions to the best of their abilities. Our next encounter was with Adre du Plessis, MD, an absolutely wonderful man and doctor.

Immediately, he took care of explaining what had occurred, and what we could possibly expect for the future. It was not always pleasant news he needed to share, but he did so with compassion and caring. You could tell he had developed a very special relationship with Elijah (and he wasn't even born yet!).

Another encounter with Children's
Months later, when Joshua developed a heart murmur in his first year of life, our primary doctor immediately suggested we find a cardiologist at Children's to evaluate him.

We had no reservations about doing this and asked Dr. duPlessis for his advice. We completely trusted (and still do) his judgment. He referred us to Wayne Tworetzky, MD, in the Cardiology Department at Children's.

Again, we were very pleased with our encounter with yet another Children's doctor and department. It was determined that Joshua's murmur was directly related to an iron deficiency he had developed, and that we didn't need to continue to see Dr. Tworetzky.

Caring people and professionals

Although we haven't been back for a visit in the Cardiology Department for more than a year, if Dr. Tworetzky sees us in the halls, he remembers us and asks how everyone is doing. I find this extremely impressive!

This is what being a patient at Children's Hospital is like -- very stressful at times, but we have developed very special relationships with an awful lot of caring people and professionals because of it!
