Clinical Services (Cardiovascular Program):
Coming to the Hospital
When a patient comes to Children's Hospital Boston for heart surgery or another procedure, there are three different possibilities of how he may be admitted at the hospital. We notify all patients and their families ahead of time as to which type of admission they will be experiencing. Our staff will also answer any questions you may have about what to expect when your child is admitted here.
Outpatient procedure: Your child will not stay overnight in the hospital. However, occasionally an overnight admission is necessary, based on a child's needs. If your child is scheduled for an outpatient procedure, your cardiologist will provide you with details about the specific procedure and plans for your child's care.
Inpatient admission: Your child will be admitted to the hospital before her procedure and will be assigned a patient room on 8 East, our cardiac inpatient unit. Your child's procedure and diagnosis will determine how long the hospitalization will be.
Same-day admission: Your child's procedure will be performed the same day you arrive at the hospital. Your child will be admitted to the hospital after the procedure. Your child will not have to stay in the hospital the night before surgery. Any tests needed before your child's procedure will be done during a clinic visit a few days before surgery.
