Fetal Program services range from prenatal evaluation and diagnosis of heart defects to treatment, including fetal intervention. Children's is at the forefront of fetal evaluation and is considered the preeminent hospital in the country for in utero cardiac procedures.

Children's Heart Transplant Service evaluates potential candidates for transplantation and manages the care of those who have received heart transplants. Since its inception in 1986, the service has performed more than 150 heart transplants, making it one of the largest pediatric heart transplant programs in the country.

Children's Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, directed by James E. Lock, MD, performs more than 1,500 diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterizations each year for children and adults with congenital and acquired heart disease.

The Boston Adult Congenital Heart (BACH) and Pulmonary Hypertension Service is a multi-institutional (Brigham and Women's Hospital/Children's Hospital/Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center), multi-disciplinary inpatient and outpatient program designed to provide for the long-term care of patients with congenital heart disease and/or pulmonary hypertension, as patients reach and progress through adulthood.

Children's Division of Non-Invasive Cardiology evaluates the cardiovascular functioning of children and adults with congenital and acquired heart disease. Using a variety of non-invasive imaging procedures, cardiac specialists can best identify cardiac problems and recommend therapeutic options. Over the past several years, the diagnostic capabilities of cardiac MRI have greatly increased, leading to a rapid increase in its application to patients with congenital heart disease.

The Preventive Cardiology Program provides consultation and care for children with both primary and secondary dyslipidemias, as well as hypertension. The majority of children are referred for lipid values over the 90th percentile, together with a positive family history of atherosclerotic disease.

The Exercise Physiology Laboratory at Children's Hospital performs more than 1,000 exercise tests each year. The most sophisticated, state-of-the-art technology is used to obtaining the most reliable and clinically useful data possible.

The Cardiovascular Genetics Program provides clinical care, information and resources for patients and families with a cardiac diagnosis in the setting of a recognized or suspected genetic condition. In addition, the program serves families with inherited cardiovascular disease.

Heart and blood vessel problems pose the largest threat to a person with Marfan's syndrome. Children's Hospital Boston's Ronald Lacro, MD, directs the Cardiovascular Genetics Clinic, which provides cardiac and genetics services to patients with a variety of genetic conditions, including Marfan syndrome.

The Pulmonary Hypertension Program at Children's Hospital is a leader in the use of nitric oxide, prostacyclin analogs, endothelin antagonists and other investigational therapies to treat both secondary and primary pulmonary hypertension in children. This is making primary pulmonary hypertension, once presumed irreversible, a treatable and potentially curable disease. Research in this area is continuing.

The Cardiac Registry of the Children's Hospital Boston is a unique resource for the study of cardiac anatomy and pathology. In addition, the Registry has a strong teaching presence within the departments of Pathology, Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery by offering a yearly introductory course in congenital cardiac pathology as well as weekly lectures for trainees and visitors.
