Jane W. Newburger, M.D., M.P.H., received the 2007 Distinguished Scientist Award (Clinical Domain) of the American College of Cardiology (ACC). She is the first pediatric cardiologist to be a recipient of this award, which recognizes contributions to the advancement of scientific knowledge through clinical research in the field of cardiovascular disease. This award recognizes the best science in the ACC, an organization of 88% of the 25,000 cardiologists in the United States.
Dr. Newburger is Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and Associate Chief for Academic Affairs in the Department of Cardiology. A graduate of Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health, Dr. Newburger has been a member or chair of numerous national committees and writing papers concerned with heart disease in children. She is the immediate past Chair of the American Heart Association (AHA) Committee on Rheumatic Fever, Endocarditis, and Kawasaki Disease, and past member of the NHLBI Advisory Council. An author of almost 200 original manuscripts, chapters, and reviews, she is an Associate Editor of Circulation, Principal Investigator of RO1, UO1, and P50 (SCCOR) grants from the NHLBI, and Director of an NHLBI T32 grant on Research Methods in Pediatric Cardiovascular Disease. Dr. Newburger's research has focused on prospective clinical studies on treatment and outcomes of congenital heart disease and Kawasaki disease. She maintains an active practice of patients with congenital and acquired heart disease.
