John E. Mayer, Jr, MD, Senior Associate in Cardiovascular Surgery, became the first recipient of the Kaplan Chair in Cardiovascular Studies in the Cardiovascular Program. David and Nancy Kaplan made the gift in memory of their son, Tommy, who was born with a complex congenital heart disease. Tommy died at age 9, but the Kaplan's remain connected to Children's. David and Nancy served as hospital trustees; Nancy was a founder and president of the Children's Hospital League and David was an overseer. Today, they are Heart Council members. The family's generosity has made so much possible, including cardiovascular research fellowships, and this latest gift will help continue the Cardiovascular Program's legacy of teaching and research excellence.

Kathy J. Jenkins, MD, MPH, Senior Associate in Cardiology and Director of the Program for Patient Safety and Quality (PSQ), earned a similar honor when she became the first recipient of the Kobren Family Chair for Patient Safety and Quality. The PSQ program identifies potential safety risks, develops and implements hospital-wide policies to address problem areas, and measures the outcomes of these initiatives. We believe it's one of the first chairs of its kind, and anticipate it to be a model for others throughout the country. Longtime hospital board member, Eric Kobren and his wife, Cathy, made a generous gift to endow the chair.
