Back to New Research & Treatments
One of the Cardiovascular Surgery Department's missions is to continuously improve the treatment of children with congenital heart disease and to advance the science that underlies these treatments.

To help meet this goal, the department maintains an active laboratory research program that is focused on myocardial preservation and development of tissue engineered cardiac valves and blood vessels.

The principal areas of active research between robotics and tissue engeneering are:

  • Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (avoidance of Norwood procedure by Hybrid Stage I)
  • Certain types of ventricular septal defects (closure on the beating heart with devices)
  • Using balloons to open valves during surgery
