Critical Care, Anesthesia, Perioperative Extension (CAPE) and Home Ventilation Program
The Critical Care, Anesthesia Perioperative Extension (CAPE) and Home Ventilation Program is a comprehensive and longitudinal service for children with chronic respiratory insufficiency, technology dependence and related medical complexities. The program promotes high quality, coordinated care to improve the lives of children with long-term ventilator assistance and their families. CAPE services are tailored to the individual patient, including extensive home visits, outpatient clinics, and inpatient consultation to meet the range of needs:

  • Long-term primary respiratory/pulmonary care and healthcare coordination with families and primary care providers with 24 hour/day response

  • Consultation and support to families, who are considering homecare of children requiring noninvasive respiratory care or transtracheal ventilator assistance

  • Critical care follow-up for short-term or temporary respiratory support as well as sedation and analgesia weans

  • Transitional/discharge care planning to coordinate with community services, rehabilitation facilities, and other acute care hospitals

  • Home ventilator equipment and environmental safety evaluations

  • Perioperative consultation services for ?at risk? patients for planning around critical care recovery and rehabilitation goals

  • Consultation and outreach to long-term care facilities for those who are not living in the community

    Our patients include children with lung disease of prematurity, neuromuscular diseases (e.g., spinal muscular atrophy and muscular dystrophy), spinal cord injuries, and other complex special healthcare needs.
