The Preoperative (or "Pre-Op") Clinic at Children's Hospital Boston is the first stop for patients scheduled for surgery or other procedures performed under anesthesia.
Here parents and families receive information about their surgical visit, including when to stop eating, what time to arrive at the hospital, what will happen during surgery, how long the patient will have to stay in the hospital, and other instructions.
Also, a pre-anesthetic evaluation in Pre-Op allows the anesthesiologist to review the patient's medical history and create a plan of care for both during and after surgery. This is the opportunity to have questions about anesthesia and the surgical process answered by our preoperative nurse practitioners and doctors.
A Pre-Op visit can take up to four hours.
