Flower Perioperative Transplant Team
The Perioperative Transplant Team at Children's Hospital Boston is a group of highly skilled and experienced professionals dedicated exclusively to the care of patients having a transplant. Transplant surgeons, operating room nursing staff, anesthesiologists, and cardiopulmonary perfusionists work collaboratively to provide individualized care to each patient. We are with your child from the time you arrive in the pre-operative waiting area until your child is safely in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) or Recovery Room (PACU).
Nursing Care and Practice
The nursing care at Children's Hospital Boston is based on the Synergy Model of Nursing Practice. This model of care matches the RN's competencies to the individual patient's needs. In the operating room (OR), an RN coordinates your child's care within the interdisciplinary operative team. The nursing team ensures patient safety and provides patient comfort. OR nursing practice involves nursing assessment, planning, evaluation and continuous reassessment of your child's needs during their surgery. The OR RNs work in partnership with the ICU team to provide continuity of care for patients undergoing transplant surgery. OR RNs work with other clinical staff including pharmacists, surgical liaison nurses, nurse practitioners and transplant program nurses to meet the needs of you and your child.
Before Your Child's Surgery
Preoperatively, the surgical team will meet you and your child. The transplant anesthesiologist and anesthesia fellow will explain the anesthesia plan. The operating room nurse will confirm the identity of your child and the procedure to be performed. Other necessary safety checks prior to surgery will be completed and any member of the team is available to answer questions before your child enters the operating room. If your child has a special blanket or stuffed animal, it may be brought into the operating room as well.
While You Wait
During your child's surgery every attempt will be made to make you as comfortable as possible. Parents are welcome to stay with their child until the child goes into the operating room. Operating room RNs believe parents are part of the healthcare team and are aware of the importance of keeping you informed. There is a family waiting room next to the operating room suite on the third floor in the Main South building. Monday through Friday between the hours of 7:00AM-7:30PM a surgical nurse liaison is available to keep you informed of the surgical progress during your child's transplant surgery. These RNs have direct communication with the operating team.

If you would like to leave the waiting room area while your child is in the operating room, you may leave your cell phone number or request a "beeper" that works in the hospital and surrounding area. Either of these will be used to contact you at any time during your child's transplant surgery.

If your child's surgery is scheduled after 7:00PM or on a Saturday or Sunday the OR RN and your floor/ICU RN will coordinate a plan to make your wait comfortable and to keep you updated on the progress of your child's surgery.

At the end of the transplant surgery the surgeon will meet with you and discuss your child's surgery. During this time, the OR RN and anesthesiologist will be preparing your child for transport to the ICU where you will be reunited with your child as soon as possible.
