During your child's surgery every attempt will be made to make you as comfortable as possible. Parents are welcome to stay with their child until the child goes into the operating room. Operating room RNs believe parents are part of the healthcare team and are aware of the importance of keeping you informed. There is a family waiting room next to the operating room suite on the third floor in the Main South building. Monday through Friday between the hours of 7:00AM-7:30PM a surgical nurse liaison is available to keep you informed of the surgical progress during your child's transplant surgery. These RNs have direct communication with the operating team. If you would like to leave the waiting room area while your child is in the operating room, you may leave your cell phone number or request a "beeper" that works in the hospital and surrounding area. Either of these will be used to contact you at any time during your child's transplant surgery. If your child's surgery is scheduled after 7:00PM or on a Saturday or Sunday the OR RN and your floor/ICU RN will coordinate a plan to make your wait comfortable and to keep you updated on the progress of your child's surgery. At the end of the transplant surgery the surgeon will meet with you and discuss your child's surgery. During this time, the OR RN and anesthesiologist will be preparing your child for transport to the ICU where you will be reunited with your child as soon as possible.
