The Social Work Department at Children's Hospital is made up of a variety of professional and programs integrating the social and psychological needs of patients and families. Each transplant program at Children's has a social worker who provides a wide range of services to support and enhance the care of patients and families before, during and after the transplant. The social worker will meet you to do a psychosocial assessment in order to understand your unique situation, to identify current and future needs, to know what resources to access in the hospital and in the community, and to help you identify practical ways to cope with the stresses related maintaining health. Services provided depend of the unique needs of each patient or family, and may include counseling and assistance with issues such as: coping with diagnosis, illness or hospitalization, impact of illness on family members, parenting and care-giving concerns, loss, developmental or life changes, educational and vocational concerns, trauma, financial difficulties, substance abuse, access to local, state and federal programs, and advocacy.
