Cardiac anesthesiologists at Children's Hospital Boston handle anesthesia and pain management for some of the most complex surgical cases undertaken anywhere. While surgeons focus their complete attention on the demanding task of repairing a defective heart, anesthesiologists carry out a series of behind-the-scene tasks that greatly affect both the safety and success of the surgery.

At Children's, a group of eight full-time physicians and several highly trained nurses and technicians manage before-surgery care for more than 1,000 surgeries each year, as well as 1,000 non-surgical procedures.

The anesthesiology team handles sedation for a variety of uncomfortable or anxiety-provoking procedures, such as:

  • imaging tests
  • catheterizations
  • general anesthesia
  • life-support for major surgery
  • pain control during and after surgery
  • pain control for chronic conditions
Whether they are sedating an infant so an IV line can be placed safely or attending to life support during a heart reconstruction, anesthesiologists are intimately involved in each patient's care throughout the procedure.
