The Optometry Department at the Martha Eliot Health Center provides comprehensive eye care for patients of all ages. The optometrist and staff perform eye examinations, treat general eye problems, and prescribe glasses and contact lenses. Services include:
Routine Pediatric and Adolescent Eye Care
- Eye exams are important for a child’s well-being as vision plays a big role in the child’s interaction and learning during his or her development.
- Pediatric Eye Exam generally consists of 3 main components:
* Vision Testing (what the child can see)
*Functional Vision Assessment (how the child uses vision)
*Ocular Health Assessment (does the child have or is he/she at risk for any pathology)
- There are no age restrictions for a pediatric eye exam, but it is highly recommended that the child have his/her first eye exam by age 3, if not earlier, as the prognosis for certain eye conditions undergoing treatment at the earliest possible age is considerably more positive.
- Vision therapy is also offered as treatment for functional eye disorders.
Routine Adult Eye Care
- Regular eye exams later in life are important in maintaining good vision.
- optometrist will check for ocular diseases such as glaucoma and cataracts which can significantly impact a patient's life.
- Patients with Diabetes should have a dilated eye exam every year to check for any complications in their eyes.
Care of Eye Injury and Disease
- Eye Care team can treat minor lacerations and trauma.
- Young patients with severe injury or disease are referred to specialists at Children's Hospital Boston.
Optical Services
- We offer a wide selection of new frames on-site, and patients can order glasses to be made.
- We provide contact lens fittings and yearly examinations, and a contact lens ordering service.
