What is the Boston Healthy Start Initiative?

The Boston Healthy Start Initiative (BHSI) is a Martha Eliot Health Center program that offers services and support to women of African descent during their pregnancy and through their second year after delivery.

What services does the program offer?

BHSI offers a variety of services to help women not only have a healthy pregnancy, but also a healthy lifestyle. Each woman in the program receives a case manager who helps her get and maintain prenatal care, and works with her on other issues such as housing, nutrition, domestic violence, mental health, substance abuse and primary health care.

Who is eligible for the program?

Although any pregnant woman of African American or African decent is eligible to participate, we encourage women to enroll during their first trimester of pregnancy. You must also be a patient at the Martha Eliot Health Center or be willing to transfer your prenatal care to Martha Eliot.
