Flower Girls' Only Dance Group
Growing Into Resilient Ladies with Opportunities to Nurture and Love Yourself (Girls Only) Dance Group at the Martha Eliot Health Center (MEHC) is a strength-based group to prepare girls, 11 to 14, for successful futures.

Each of our sessions focuses on a different part of an adolescent's life, including:

  • self-esteem
  • relationships
  • school
  • community
  • cultural identity
  • future goals
  • conflict resolution
Our group encourages girls to discover their individual strengths and bond through open discussions, poetry readings and written exercises, allowing them to reflect on important issues in their lives.
Dance Instruction
The girls also participate in dance instruction provided by the Hyde Square Task Force's Ritmo en Acción Dance Troupe instructors. The girls learn salsa, create their own hip-hop dance routine and perform it for their family and friends.
Significance of our summer programs
The Girls' Only Dance Group and our other summer programs were created to provide strong, positive alternatives for young people in Boston and to address strong community concern over continued neighborhood violence. Additional summer programming began in 2006 for MEHC patients and other youth of the Bromley Heath housing development and the greater Jamaica Plain and Roxbury areas.
Past Sessions
In 2006, the Girls' Only Dance Group performed for their family and friends at the Nate Smith House. Their performance was part of the Hyde Square Task Force's end of summer dinner and exhibition event.

Caryn Rodgers, PhD, an Adolescent Psychology Fellow at Children's, Susan Paul, an AmeriCorps Community HealthCorps volunteer, and two youth peer leaders co-led the program. The peer leaders created the name of the girls' group and assisted with outreach, recruitment and running the group throughout the summer.
