Game Time is a summer basketball clinic for boys, 11 to 14, at the Martha Eliot Health Center (MEHC). We teach our participants important life skills in addition to helping them improve their basketball game.

We use the game of basketball because of its popularity among local youth and because it offers team-building opportunities.

Skills taught in our program include:

  • mutual encouragement and respect
  • violence prevention
  • anger management
  • conflict mediation and resolution
We also encourage discussions in our program where we talk about the value of education, what it's like to be in middle and high school and the importance of building self-esteem.
Significance of our summer programs
Game Time Boys' Basketball and our other summer programs were created to provide strong, positive alternatives for young people in Boston and to address strong community concern over continued neighborhood violence. Additional summer programming began in 2006 for MEHC patients and other youth of the Bromley Heath housing development and the greater Jamaica Plain and Roxbury areas.
Past Sessions
Our twice-a-week summer 2006 sessions were led by Coaches Wayne Turner and Kin'ta Johnson and Shaw Natsui, Adolescent Services Program Coordinator.

Turner is a former standout under Coach Rick Pitino at the University of Kentucky where he helped the Wildcats achieve two NCAA titles and one runner-up trophy. Johnson is a former high school basketball player and teammate of Turner's. They both grew up in the Jamaica Plain and Mission Hill areas of Boston and wanted to give back to the youth from their neighborhoods.
