In celebration of Social Work Month, Martha Eliot Health Center hosted a special event on Monday, March 24, which recognized the late Pharnal Longus, PhD, MSW. Dr. Longus was a social worker who died in September and who has made a substantial contribution to the profession.

Sonia Pinnock, MSW and Janel Lucas, Ph.D., MSW, are co-chairs of the Committee on Ethnic and Racial Affairs (CERA) of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW). This special event and others are organized through the hard work and commitment of the Committee Members. Susan Paul, BSW, a Committee Member, created the program layout and design for the day of the event and Jaime Crespo, CHB Multicultural Communications Representative, designed the bookmark keepsake distributed to the attendees. Susan Lambert, director of Social Work Department and Interpreter Services provided support by attending.

Members of the Committee, the honorees - Luz Marina Barreto-Longus, his wife and sons, Salim Felipe Longus and Omar Sekou Longus - colleagues from Salem State College, where Dr. Longus worked for more than 30 years, former students and colleagues from other institutions, as well as MEHC Staff participated in the successful and well attended event. Carol Leggett, Ambulatory Service Representative and Carol Wilson, Substance Abuse Counselor, also attended the event.

The Committee was aided by support from MEHC Executive Director, James Cote, and Dr. Jean Wilkinson, Director of the Human Services Department.

"Pharnal Longus made an impression on me from the first time I met him over twenty years ago," says Sonia Pinnock. "It is only recently that I have come to know and become more fully aware of the depth of his commitment, the magnitude of the programs he created, and the multitude of lives he affected. The CERA Committee is privileged to honor this consummate social worker."
