Frequently asked questions

Q: How many social workers apply to the program? How many are accepted?
A: We typically receive between 30 and 50 applicants with space for two fellows in Psychiatry, and 1 fellow in each of the other departments.

Q: Would I have an opportunity to meet with a staff person at some time during the application process?
A: After reviewing the applications, Elizabeth Wharff, PhD, MSW, LICSW (director of the training program), and other senior social workers interview selected applicants.

Q: When are the decisions made?
A: Usually, within a month of the application deadline. All applicants will be notified either way.

Q: Do I need my Mass social work licensure before I apply?
A: Fellows should have their Mass licensure (LICSW or LCSW) by September of the year they start the fellowship. You do not need to have the licensure to apply.

Q: Am I eligible to receive health benefits?
A: All fellows except LEND are eligible to receive benefits at an additional cost.

Q: What days are the LEND fellowship?
A: All day Friday starting at 8:00 a.m. is required. Other time can be negotiated.

Q: What days are the PACT fellowship?
A: All day Thursday, at least a half day on Friday, and one full day early in the week. Otherwise, days/times can be negotiated to make the total 32 hours.

Q: How do I get paid? Is my stipend taxed?
A: You will be paid as a monthly employee with taxes taken out. Except LEND, which is paid monthly, with NO taxes taken out.

Q: What should I write about in my two page letter?
A: You should include those aspects that led you to apply for this Fellowship. State what you hope to learn, how you learn most readily, whether you have special interests you would like to develop, and how you think this advanced training might help you realize future goals.

Q: How should I submit my application materials?
A: Materials should all be emailed except the transcripts which should be mailed. However, all mailed or faxed materials will be accepted. All materials if sent separately will be collated together and you will be notified if anything is missing.
