Simulator Program
CRM Courses
Clinical and Behavioral Learning Objectives are outlined for each Crisis Resource Management (CRM) course.Clinical objectives vary as scenarios are uniquely designed to meet the particular clinical learning objectives of each department for which the course is implemented including:
- Medical-Surgical Intensive Care
- Cardiac Intensive Care Unit
- Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
- Post Anesthesia Care Unit
- Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory
- Operating Room
- Neuroscience Floor
- Gastroenterology Procedure Unit
- Medicine ICU
The Simulator Program features clinical scenarios based on real cases or sentinel events. Behavioral objectives focus on the principles of CRM including: role clarity, effective communication, personnel support, resource utilization, and situational awareness/global perspective.
At the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Demonstrate principles of crisis resource management in the pediatric setting.
- Ensure role clarity among team members by identifying individual roles and
- critical functions of each team member.
- Communicate effectively.
- Call for and utilize help in a timely manner.
- Develop practical skills in technical aspects of crisis management.
- Recognize and utilize available resources in clinical area.
- Self-reflect on personal and teamwork behaviors ultimately leading to
- attitudinal changes.
The above learning objectives are explored through using state of the art simulation techniques immediately followed by facilitated discussion and models of debriefing. Trained facilitators provoke self-reflection among the individual and group as a vehicle of change and improvement. Debriefings among multidisciplinary groups are aimed at uncovering and exploring rationales (assumptions, attitudes, bias’ and beliefs) guiding behaviors during acute events with the ultimate goal of improving team behaviors and effectiveness.
