Flower Policy Implementation
The Simulator Program at Children's Hospital Boston has expanded beyond competency-based training and crisis resource management training to educating and training staff on new policies.
Parent Presence During Invasive Procedures and Resuscitation
Participants: Nurses, Physicians and Respiratory Therapists from the MSICU, CICU, and NICU; Psychosocial, and Pastoral Care Staff.

Description: In order to educate staff on the implementation of this guideline, a simulation-enhanced training program was created to provide experiential learning opportunities for those staff who will serve as parent facilitators. The half-day program was facilitated by a clinical psychologist and nurse educators for 8-12 interdisciplinary participants. The curriculum consisted of an introductory didactic session reviewing the literature on parent presence and outlining the guideline followed by a brainstorming exercise in which participants were encouraged to build upon their expertise and share facilitator strategies already in use. The centerpieces of the program were two clinical scenarios that were videotaped. The clinical scenarios utilized human patient simulators to mimic the role of patients and professional actors to enact the role of parents. Actors were directed to illustrate a range of parent responses to invasive procedures and resuscitation. Within the simulated environment, participants practiced strategies to assist parent coping and successful facilitation of family presence. Clinical scenarios were then reviewed by the interdisciplinary learning team and actors during a debriefing session.
